A. SITUATION AWARENESS: With ongoing Maumee River flooding impacting Lucas
County and surrounding areas, the Simulated Poison Center advises immediate
awareness and communication regarding potential toxicology-related hazards
to affected populations and response personnel.
B. KEY HAZARDS IDENTIFIED:
1. Contaminated Floodwaters: Floodwaters may contain raw sewage, agricultural
runoff (pesticides, herbicides), industrial chemicals, fuel (gasoline, oil),
and other hazardous substances. Direct contact should be minimized.
2. Mold Growth: Rapid and extensive mold growth is anticipated in flooded
structures. This poses significant respiratory hazards and can exacerbate
allergies and asthma.
3. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning: Increased risk from improper use of
generators, charcoal grills, propane stoves, or other fuel-burning devices
indoors or in poorly ventilated areas during power outages.
4. Displaced Hazardous Materials: Household cleaners, pesticides, pool
chemicals, and other stored hazardous materials in flooded basements/garages
can mix, creating dangerous fumes or contact hazards. Propane tanks may
be dislodged.
5. Animal-Related Exposures: Displaced wildlife (snakes, rodents) and insects
may increase the risk of bites, stings, or disease transmission.
6. Medication Contamination: Personal medications exposed to floodwaters
should be considered contaminated and disposed of safely.
C. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LUCAS COUNTY EOC / HEALTH DEPARTMENT:
1. Emphasize public messaging regarding floodwater avoidance and hygiene
(thorough handwashing, wound care).
2. Issue warnings on safe generator use and CO detector importance.
3. Provide guidance on safe cleanup procedures, including mold remediation
and handling of displaced hazardous materials.
4. Advise caution regarding displaced animals.
5. Direct public and responders to the Simulated Poison Center (1-800-222-1222)
for any suspected exposures or poisoning incidents.
