Clermont County Ramps Up Relief Efforts for Ohio River Flood Evacuees

Batavia, OH – June 8, 2025 – Clermont County has mobilized a comprehensive response to aid residents displaced by severe flooding along the Ohio River, following a destructive summer storm that struck late Friday night. The storm, which capped a week of heavy rainfall, caused the Ohio River to overflow, submerging communities like New Richmond and forcing hundreds to evacuate amidst widespread power outages and communication failures.

The Clermont County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) activated its emergency operations center early Saturday, working alongside local and state partners to manage the crisis. “The Ohio River flooding has hit our communities hard, especially in New Richmond, where entire neighborhoods are underwater,” said EMA Director Pam Haverkos. “We’re focused on providing immediate relief and ensuring everyone has a safe place to go.”

Two emergency shelters have been established to accommodate evacuees. The primary shelter at New Richmond High School, opened in collaboration with the American Red Cross, is currently housing over 150 families. A second shelter at the Clermont County Fairgrounds in Owensville is providing refuge for another 100 individuals, including a designated area for pets, supported by the Clermont County Animal Shelter. “We’re seeing a lot of emotional exhaustion,” said Red Cross volunteer Sarah Thompson. “People have lost homes, and many arrived with just the clothes on their backs. We’re providing meals, cots, and a space to start processing this.”
